Thermal insulation is the process of reducing the transfer of heat from one place to another or reducing heat loss or gain. This is achieved by using insulating materials that reduce the flow of heat between adjacent surfaces.

The effectiveness of thermal insulation depends on several important properties of insulating materials:

  1. Density: Insulating materials with high density work better in preventing the transfer of heat. The higher the density, the greater the ability to prevent the flow of heat.
  2. Specific Heat Capacity: Specific heat capacity determines a material’s ability to store heat. Materials with high specific heat

Extruded Polystyrene (XPS)

Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) foam, commonly referred to as “blue foam,” is known for its excellent insulating properties, strength, and resistance to water. It is widely used in a variety of thermal insulation applications, including:

  1. Roof and Wall Insulation: Blue foam can be used for insulating roofs and walls in buildings to help maintain comfortable indoor temperatures and reduce energy consumption.
  2. Floor Insulation: It can also be used for insulating floors to provide thermal insulation and protection against cold and moisture.
  3. Surface Insulation: Blue foam can be applied to surface areas such as green roofs, ship surfaces, and hot tubs.

Blue foam is resistant to water absorption and possesses structural strength, making it suitable for applications where materials are exposed to moisture. It is also known for its resistance to thermal drift, making it a suitable choice for thermal insulation in a variety of environments.

Expanded Polystyrene (EPS)

Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) foam molded insulation is a common choice for thermal insulation applications, and it is widely used in cold storage room insulation due to its numerous advantages in this context.

 It is known for its lightweight nature, making it not add significant additional load to the structure of cold storage rooms.

Moreover, it is resistant to water and moisture, making it an ideal choice for this application.

Careful design and installation of EPS foam are essential to ensure effective thermal insulation and prevent the leakage of heat or cold air from the outside.

 Typically, EPS foam panels are installed on the interior surfaces of the room, including walls, ceilings, and floors, to maintain low temperatures within the cold storage area.

Thermal insulation Applications

1- Thermal insulation of external walls.

  • Insulation by constructing two parallel walls, where various types of thermal insulation are installed between the inner and outer walls of the building. In this case, there are no thermal pathways within the building, but thermal pathways are considered through the beams and columns that are not covered by the thermal insulation material in the outer walls.
  • External insulation, in which the building is insulated from the outside, and the building is clad from the exterior after installing one of the thermal insulation materials such as polystyrene panels or rock wool and other thermal insulation materials. This method is considered ideal in the thermal insulation process, as it covers the entire concrete walls and columns, preventing the presence of pathways for heat transfer into the interior, and is suitable for both existing and under-construction buildings.

2- Thermal insulation of Roofs.

Insulating concrete roofs is implemented through two different methods

  • Traditional Insulation System :

In this system, the thermal insulation layer is located beneath the waterproofing layer This system is used when heat-insulating materials with water-absorption capabilities are employed. In this case, it is necessary to use a vapor barrier layer beneath the thermal insulation layer..

  • Inverted Protected System :

In this system, the thermal insulation layer is positioned above the waterproofing layer, preserving the waterproofing layer from temperature fluctuations. Materials with lower water absorption properties are utilized with this system to enhance thermal insulation
